How KDP royalties actually work right now
Two changes landed in the last year that most calculators still don't account for. This one does.
Ebook: 35% or 70%
The 35% option is available at any price, no strings attached. The 70% option pays more but only inside a price band, and Amazon deducts a delivery fee based on your file size first.
The band moved. Until July 2026 the 70% ceiling was $9.99 — Amazon raised it to $12.99 (the first increase since 2007). A $11.99 ebook that used to fall back to 35% now qualifies for 70%.
Delivery is rate/MB × file size, deducted before the 70% cut — not the 35% one. US rate is $0.15/MB; it varies by marketplace (see the calculator above).
Print: 50% or 60%, minus printing cost
Paperback and hardcover both pay a royalty rate minus what it costs Amazon to physically print your book — page count and ink color both move that number.
The rate isn't flat anymore. Since June 2025, KDP pays 50% below a price threshold and 60% at or above it — $9.99 in the US, £7.99 UK, €9.99 EU, $13.99 CAD/AUD. Price your paperback at $9.98 instead of $9.99 and you lose the entire 10-point jump, not a fraction of it.
Printing cost has its own step: a flat fee for shorter books, then a fixed cost plus a per-page rate once you cross ~110 pages (108 in Australia). A 90-page book and a 300-page book are not on the same curve.
Questions authors actually ask
Why does the calculator say I'd lose money at this price?
Print books have a real manufacturing cost that comes out of your royalty before you see a cent — a long paperback priced too low can cost more to print than it earns. Raise the price or pick a shorter trim; the calculator will show you the break-even point either way.
Should I always choose 70% over 35% for ebooks?
Only if your price falls inside the eligible band for your marketplace. Below the band, 70% isn't offered at all; a few marketplaces (Brazil, Japan, Mexico, India) layer on extra conditions Amazon documents separately — check your dashboard before you rely on it for those specific countries.
Does this account for Kindle Unlimited page reads?
No — KENP page-read payouts come from a separate monthly fund with a rate that moves every month, so there's no fixed number to calculate against. This tool covers direct sales only.
Is hardcover available everywhere?
Amazon publishes hardcover printing costs for the US, UK and the euro marketplaces. Canada and Australia aren't in KDP's hardcover program yet, so the calculator won't show a number there.
